AI usage and limits
Plugins that use the WordPress AI Client send prompts to the AI provider you connected in Settings > Connectors, and you pay that provider. Agent Control > AI Usage shows this month’s tokens used through the AI Client, by plugin and model (requests, prompt tokens, completion tokens and total), and lets you set monthly limits.
Set limits#
- Open Agent Control > AI Usage.
- Under Monthly token limits, set Site-wide tokens per month for all plugins together, or leave it at 0 for no limit.
- To limit one plugin, enter its folder name under Plugin slug to limit and its tokens per month, then click Save limits.
What happens at a limit#
- At 80% of a limit, the approvers get one email that month.
- When the limit is reached, further AI Client prompts from that plugin (or from every plugin, for the site-wide limit) are blocked until next month.
Usage is attributed to the plugin that started the prompt. Limits are in tokens, not money, because provider prices change often.
Budgets cover AI spend that happens inside WordPress through the AI Client. When an external agent such as a desktop app drives your site over MCP, its own model tokens are billed by its provider and are not visible to your site. To limit what external agents do, use rate limits and rules.
